The song "God Sends a Child" was composed by Kendall Ross Bean (lyrics, music and arrangement). It was originally commissioned by the city of Oakland, California in January 1994 as part of the 21 Days of Light public awareness days. The theme of "unity through diversity" was represented by this one song, being sung in various languages, musical styles and in various locations during the same period of time. It was performed in over 200 places by performers and to audiences representing diverse creeds, races and cultures in the city. This video, featuring parents and babies, was broadcast on KTOP cable television in Oakland, CA and also served as a backdrop for a live performance at the start of the Martin Luther King Day Walk, featuring words by Mayor Elihu Harris, radio personality Emmitt Powell and a performance by two children's choirs and soloist Verlin Sandles.
In 1995, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir commissioned Kendall Ross to write a choral version. This was performed, with excerpts from this video edited into the live Choir performance to an audience of 128 million carried on over 2,000 television and radio stations as part of the Music and the Spoken Word for the broadcast during Martin Luther King day weekend.
